Love in your marriage is built on the art of patience. As the Bible says, “Love is patient. Love is kind.”
Why do you think it was written in that order? Because by human nature, we fall short. Therefore, no relationship will be perfect except for the baggage we bring each day from our shortcomings.

We all meet that perfection on a daily basis unfortunately.
But God challenges us. He is patient with us. Hence, He expects us to be patient in our marriage.
“Love is patient. Love is kind.” ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4
Now let’s first paint a picture of what patience is not.
Imagine you are listening to your spouse complain about something or yelling at you directly. When all is said, you walk out. Nothing said.
Do you think that is patience?
Some would say yes. But actually, it is not mirroring the patience God shows us.
Instead, listen with an empathetic ear in order to understand how your spouse is feeling on the inside.
Ok. Hold on. I understand how you might be feeling. He has no right to speak to me that way.
Yes, there is a difference from having a disagreement and heated discussion than verbal abuse in a marriage.
I experienced this yesterday with my husband. He was raising his voice as we discussed a situation that was not life or death, but urgent. But what I caught myself doing was taking his frustration that had nothing to do with me, and internalize it as he was yelling at me.
Honestly, he really wasn’t. Yes his tone of voice had a bite, and his volume was greater than normal. But it wasn’t about me. That was my take on it.
So then what happened? With my lack of patience, I became defensive and that brought no quick resolution to the pressing issue.
UGH!!! This is NOT “Love is patient.”
If you want to build a strong foundation in your marriage, you must master the art of patience.
That translates into listening with God’s heart.
