We talk a lot about breaking bad habits and making systematic changes. But what about our children? Even their bad habits can be broken.
However, we as parents do not usually focus that much on their habits. We see their habits more related to their “stages of life”.

Wouldn’t that be fantastic if our bad habits were correlated to the “stages of life”?
You may know some of them.
- Terrible Two’s
- Puberty
- Mid-life crisis
- The Golden years
Regardless, as we grow up, we develop habits. Those continue to grow too as we mature.
But not all habits are created equal.
In our household, having five children with five very distinct personalties makes for an interesting habit basket.
One question that comes up often is, “How do I break my child of bad habits? Won’t they just grow out of them?”
Now technically, those are two questions. If you want to help your child, you have to look beyond the habit.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Look beyond the habit!
As parents, we get emotionally-centered on what our child is doing right and watching closely what they’re doing wrong all the while trying to raise the perfect child.
You and I both know that a perfect child is an unheard of. But we both know that our children are extra special, yet still need us to parent.
So what does it look like to look beyond the habit?
- Understand the behavior — Where is the coming from? The root of the behavior. It might be related to a stage of life. Then again, it might not be.
- Team Up — Work with your child to change the habit. If you make it an “I’m right, you’re wrong,” creating a change is going to be challenging. You don’t need to add to the already tense situation. When you have increased resistance, you have an increase in stress. And with stress, you want to retreat. So team up!
- Create a positive solution — This is where you need to be specific with the child. What you did for another child, may not work with this child. Be child specific!
Whether you are an adult creating change or a child who needs to make a change, bad habits can be broken with consistency, persistence, and lots of love!
You know how hard it is to break a habit for yourself. Be considerate when helping your child. Be careful not to shame or blame the child. That will push them further into a corner.
- Love them where they’re at!
- Be consistent with the plan.
- Empower them with direction.
No one has to feel tethered to a bad habit. Habits can be changed.
You are doing an incredible job raising your child!
