In today’s world, our children grow up way too fast. Whether it’s a tablet in hand at six months or the ACT in sixth grade, a headstart seems to be en vogue. What happened to the power of play?
I can remember when we would drive to the park to enjoy the day outside. Slides, swings, and see-saws kept the children active and entertained. Soon the merry-go-round became the desired attraction.

By the time the children were tired of feeling the centripetal forces, I needed to sit down to slow my spinning head.
I’m amazed how fast people will put their kids in the best of the best daycare, traveling team, first car, prom dress, or even the best of the best computer to give them what they may or may not have had growing up, BUT will leave out the most natural thing; PLAY!
When we send our children outside to play, little did most of us realize we were nurturing the emotional, cognitive, language, and self-regulation skills. All these skills help to build executive function and social aptitude in children and enhances critical brain structures that support pursuing goals and ignoring distractions. (Reference WebMD)
Now, how’s that for a little R&D?!?
In a few short words, play is vital for healthy development. And I believe we too as adults can benefit from play.
Studies show how play and being outside reduces toxic stress. More play, lower levels of cortisol. Plus, think of all the joyful discoveries just from playing.
If you want to give your child a headstart in personal development, go out and play!

Keep in mind that when the child has free play, it raises awareness to his/her own interests and preferences. Basically, what they like.
If play is guided by an adult, and the child is managing his/her actions, then it’s more goal-driven.
The power of play is like art and should be appreciated. Spend time in your day playing!
