Every day can be consumed with irregular details and hyped emotions. Just trying to get it all right creates tension. Is perfection wrecking your family?
If you woke up every morning with a different spouse and different kiddos, what would you do?

Well, that’s like every morning for most of us parents. You never know when your child is going to go off on a tangent, yell just because, or stay quiet with you wishing he/she was louder.
That’s the reality of parenting. We get the worst with the best. And call it as you may, it’s life!
But that doesn’t make it any easier to raise a family with how fast the world is moving. Technology changes overnight and opinions of what’s right changes just as fast.
So how do you break the cycle of perfection so it doesn’t wreck your family, yet allows you to live a life in harmony?
You gotta clean out the refrigerator!
The K.I.S.S. ~ Clean out the refrigerator!
Think about what you use a refrigerator for. You keep foods in there so you can eat them primarily for nutrition or fuel for your body.
The same goes for what we keep within ourselves and how we use it to fuel our conversations, actions, thoughts, and dreams. We have this “refrigerator” that contains what we need to get through the day.
But unfortunately, we are using a LOT of stuff that is spoiled. We bring in things from how we were raised. And usually, it’s not the good stuff. Parenting becomes a potluck in many ways.
Now I’m all for potlucks, but you still need to have a few good dishes to share.
And that is why you start by cleaning out your parenting refrigerator.
Keep in mind — you may have to clean out the refrigerator more than you think. Stages and seasons change. This requires you to stay in the know.
- Replenish what supports the manners you desire in your child. This is a constant, but the approach may be served differently in the seasons or stages. <Acknowledge when spoken to.>
- Discard the demands that are not working. What we say to our children can come across as demands, not requests. Now I know we think we can control our kiddos, but you cannot. However, you can find a way to communicate in which they are open to receiving what is being taught or reinforced.
- Use the leftovers first. If was good enough the first time, it will be better the second time.
Children are challenging regardless of their age. When you get tired and don’t know what to do, be sure to love unconditionally. That’s the best seasoning to any parenting technique.
