As a parent, you are positioned to raise your children to write their own stories. But at times, you might be stealing the pen. Rules are for who?
If only there were more ways to learn how to parent maybe this world would be in a better place. Or would it?

The school year has come to a close for our youngest son with his exemption from finals. Yet, he has many friends that are required to take exams.
Lucky for him, his hard work throughout the school year paid off.
So why can’t we have our parenting years end early with no final exams?
I really think that would be a miracle. But what I have found is that most of us parent to what the child is going through, not where the child is headed or directed.
So to a degree, we as parents are two steps behind our children because we are always looking back to fix what happened.
What if? You know me and my what-ifs…
Parents could work a step or two ahead of where the child is going, do you think life would be different for the better?
Most definitely!
If you are always a jumping bean (always reacting to what’s around you), there is no room to get ahead.
You want to be able to respond in a way that opens up a dialog while increasing and enhancing what the child needs within his/her stage of life.
Why not study early and get a free pass out of class?
You’ve gotta respond, not react.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Respond, not react!
Don’t let your head hit the pillow if you are too many steps behind your children. You can’t let them get ahead.
Now, yes, they too need to grow within their own abilities, talents, gifts, and all. However, when you are the sole provider for right versus wrong, you better be two steps ahead. Or you’ll be backtracking for years to come.
- Set your sights on the hills, not the valleys. This is knowing where you are leading your child. And yes, it’s your job to lead them. Eventually, your child will take over the reins, but not until they’ve earned your trust and have reached an age that is agreeable for them to pursue without full consultation with you.
- See your child for what they don’t see. You have got to be the eyes and ears for your children. And that means more work. Welcome to parenthood! But it’s really so rewarding. However, you have to do what a parent is supposed to do. Don’t be a friend, be a compassionate leader.
- Start with the art. Help your child paint their life picture every day. Make time to chat or grab a snack. Be present both physically and emotionally. As your child goes from infancy to teenager, grow with them, not against them. It’s your time to invest in your child.
So you know those rules? They’re more for you than for your child.
Set your own boundaries and then sculpt your child’s every day.
This is a beautiful moment…
